Asia-Pacific Markets Mixed on the Day

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index finished higher Tuesday to end at its highest close in more than a month led by gainers in financial stocks, and strong inflows from the Mainland through the Stock Connect.

At the close of trade, the Hang Seng index (HSI) was up 29.58 or 0.1% at 29,135.73, its highest close since 18 March.

China shares finished lower Tuesday as investors took profits following the Monday’s strong gains.

At the close, the Shanghai Composite index was down 0.13% to 3,472.94. The blue-chip CSI300 index was down 0.07% after posting its best session in more than 5 wks Monday.

Japanese shares fell Tuesday by their most in a month. The Nikkei settled down 1.97% to 29,100.38, while the broader TOPIX fell 1.55% to 1,926.25.

Australian shares snapped a 5-day rally Tuesday as tech stocks tracked an overnight decline in US markets. The S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.7% to 7,017.80, and New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 fell 0.7% to 12678.55.
