Around the region, MSCI’s Asia sans-Japan stock index was firmer by 0.5%, while Japan’s Nikkei index closed down 0.8%.

Shares in Mainland China closed at multi-year highs Wednesday, extending their winning streak to the 7th session.

At the close, the Shanghai Composite index was 1.7% higher at 3,403.44, its highest closing mark since February 2018, while the blue-chip CSI300 index ended up 1.6%, at its highest closing mark since June 2015.

The CSI300’s financial sector sub-index jumped 2.6%, the consumer staples sector gained 0.3% and the Real Estate index +0.1

Hong Kong stocks moved higher Wednesday, ending near 4-month highs hit in Tuesday’s session, as market sentiment was lifted on hopes of recovery in the Chinese economy after a 7th straight session of gainers in Mainland shares.

At the close of trade, the Hang Seng index was up 0.6% at 26,129.18. The ‘H-share’ Hang Seng China Enterprises index rose 1.4%. 

Indonesian shares gained 1.8% to hit a 1-month high Wednesday, while the rupiah was flat Vs USD.

Australian shares fell Wednesday as stringent curbs imposed by Victoria state to contain a spike in C-19 cases dashed hopes of a swift economic recovery.

The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.5% to 5,983.1 led by financials.

In New Zealand, the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index reversed its course to trade 0.2% lower to 11,725.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei share average fell 0.19% to 22,571.55 by the midday break after moving in and out of positive territory, with 102 advancers against 120 decliners.

The broader Topix rose 0.06% at 1,572.73 by the recess, with 50% of the 33 sector sub-indexes on the Tokyo exchange trading higher.
