Australian shares started the financial year on a positive note

The S&P/ASX 200 index was up 0.6% at 5,934.40 at the close of trade, helped by a burst of late-buying after the Bell. The benchmark ended 1.4% firmer Tuesday after a senior central bank official said the economy would need “considerable” support for some time.

New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index ended lower for the 1st time in 4 sessions. The index was down 0.9% to 11,350.27

China’s benchmark index closed at its highest mark in 4 months Wednesday, as the central bank’s move on rate cuts and the country’s improved June factory data continued to fuel hopes for a quicker economic recovery.

At the close, the Shanghai Composite index was up 1.38% at 3,025.98. The blue-chip CSI300 index was up 2.01%, with its financial sector sub-index higher by 2.66%, the consumer staples sector was up 3.36%, the Real Estate index up 7.04% and the healthcare sub-index down 1.18%.

The smaller Shenzhen index ended up 0.79% and the start-up board ChiNext Composite index was weaker by 0.762%

Japanese shares inched lower Wednesday as investor sentiment soured after the Bank of Japan’s Quarterly corporate survey showed the domestic business mood worsened to an 11-yr low because of the C-19 coronavirus chaos.

The benchmark Nikkei average fell 0.19% to 22,246.20 by the mid-day break. The broader Topix dipped 0.45% to 1,551.80 by the recess.
