US House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) in Critical Condition after Surgery
At least 5 people were rushed to medical facilities with injuries after a gunman opened fire on Republican members of the US Congress Wednesday at a practice for an annual congressional Democrats Vs. Republicans charity baseball game, said police.
Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and was receiving care at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, his office said. According to the hospital, Mr. Scalise underwent surgery and is currently in critical condition.
Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Arkansas-based Tyson Foods Inc and former staffer for two former Republican representatives, was shot in the chest, according to witnesses including Senator Jeff Flake.
In a statement, Mika’s family said he was shot multiple times, was in critical condition and was currently in surgery.
Zachary Barth, a staffer for Texas Representative Roger Williams, was shot and was being treated, Mr. Williams said. “He is receiving medical attention but is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery,” Williams said on Twitter.
Capitol Hill police officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner were also among the wounded, according to House Republican leader Paul Ryan. Both serve as part of Mr. Scalise’s security detail and were in good condition, according to US Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa.
“It is clear to me, based on eyewitness accounts, that without these heroes, Agents Bailey and Griner, many lives would have been lost,” Ryan said during a speech from the House floor.
A House Democratic aide said it was his understanding that Agent Bailey was not shot, but had twisted his ankle during the attack.
James T. Hodgkinson 66 anni, of Belleville, Il, identified by law enforcement officials as the deceased gunman who opened fire on GOP lawmakers at a Virginia baseball field, was “living out of his gym bag” in Alexandria.
Further, Mr. Hodgkinson who was shot and killed by police during the rampage, had been at the YMCA early Wednesday before he went to the ball-field where he carried out the attack.
According to his social media, Mr. Hodgkinson was an avid supporter of US Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and a hater of President Donald Trump.
In March, Mr. Hodgkinson posted that “Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.”
Another post, from Y 2015, was aimed at Mr. Scalise, according to reports.
“Here’s a Republican that should Lose His Job, but they Gave Him a Raise,” Mr. Hodgkinson wrote, including a political cartoon that portrayed Mr. Scalise speaking to a group of people clad in Ku Klux Klan hoods.
