China’s blue-chip index finished Wednesday at its highest mark 13 yrs after rising for 5 sessions running, as investors expect the government to sustain policy supports to counter COVID-19’s persisting impact on the economy. 

At the close, the blue-chip CSI300 index was up 0.92% at 5,417.68, and the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.63% at 3,550.88.

Japanese stocks closed lower Wednesday as sentiment was dented by a likely announcement of a state of emergency in Tokyo and surrounding cities later this wk.

The Nikkei 225 Index ended down 0.38% to 27,055.94. The broader Topix rose 0.28% at 1,796.18.

Australian shares fell Wednesday, with investors struggling to find solid footing on concerns that a Sydney China Virus cluster may have spread to regional areas.

The S&P/ASX 200 index closed 1.1% lower to 6,607.1. New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index closed -0.3%
