Tuesday’s World Markets: Asia and Oceania

Southeast Asian stock markets rose Tuesday as data showed China factory activity unexpectedly expanded in March after contracting to a record low in the previous month even though the coronavirus pandemic showed few signs of abating.

Indian shares edged up Tuesday, tracking broader Asian peers, after upbeat factory data from China gave investors hope of a rebound in activity, despite a spike in coronavirus cases back home.

The broader NSE Nifty 50 index was up 1.81% at 8,431.1 by 0435 GMT on the last trading day of the current financial year, while the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex rose 1.66% to 28,912.33

Japanese stock benchmark Nikkei gained Tuesday as Wall Street stabilizzed and factory data from China held out the hope of a rebound in activity, even though the global coronavirus crisis showed no signs of abating.

The Nikkei share average rose 0.8% to 19,233.50 by the midday break.

Australian shares extended gains Tuesday, helped by quarter-end balancing and on measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus outbreak and contain its economic impact, but the benchmark index was poised for its biggest ever monthly drop.

The S&P/ASX 200 index rose 3.3%, or 173 pts, at 5,353.40 by 0113 GMT after Monday’s 7% jump. For the month, it was down 17.5%, reflecting investors’ fears of a deep recession due to the pandemic.

SKorean shares rose more than 2% Tuesday as factory data from China beat forecasts and hinted at a rebound in activity. The won strengthened, while the benchmark bond yield rose.

The Seoul stock market’s main KOSPI rose 36.34 pts, or 2.12%, at 1,753.46 by 0253 GMT.

Indonesian shares rose as much as 3.5%, underpinned by consumer staples and financials.

Thai shares rose up to 2.4%, with financial and energy stocks leading the gains.

Vietnamese equities gained on financials.

Philippine stocks added up to 4%, with big caps SM Investments and Ayala Land rising more than 3% each.
