Thursday’s World Markets Outlook: Asia-Pacific

 Australian shares finished higher Thursday as investors hoped for further stimulus measures to counter the effects of the latest C-19 coronavirus-led restrictions.

The S&P/ASX 200 index was 0.6% higher at 5,955.5 pts at the end of trade.

New Zealand, the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index registered its worst session in 3.5 months, closing 2.3% lower.

China shares extended their rally into an 8th day, fuelled by liquidity, policy support and retail investor enthusiasm, even as regulators cracked down on margin financing and as state media warned of market risks.

The Shanghai Composite index was up 1.39% at 3,450.59, its highest close since February 2018. The index gained for 8 straight sessions, its longest winning streak since January 2018.

The blue-chip CSI300 index was up 1.4% at its highest close since June 2015.

The smaller Shenzhen index finished up 2.7% and the start-up board ChiNext Composite index was higher by 3.985%.

Japanese shares bounced Thursday buoyed by technology-related stocks following a rise in US peers overnight, but gainers were limited.

The benchmark Nikkei share average rose 0.4% to 22,529.29. On the Nikkei index, there were 63 advancers against 158 decliners.

The broader Topix ended flat at 1,557.24, with all but 9 of the 33 sector sub-indexes on the Tokyo exchange trading in negative territory
