The UN’s health organization once had clean reputation, that was until the Chinese communist backed him for its Top management position, that makes it failure all the more shameful.
On 30 December a Chinese doctor, Li Wenliang, warned colleagues about the outbreak of an illness resembling SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which had triggered pandemic in Y 2003.
Public-health officials rely on the acuity of doctors like Li, whose early warnings prevent the spread of deadly diseases. But China’s communist authorities did not reward Dr. Li; they summoned him to the Public Security Bureau in Wuhan on accusations that he had made false statements and disrupted the public order.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) followed up with numerous other arrests, and publicly warned that it would punish anyone spreading “rumors” on social media.
By mid January 2020, Chinese doctors knew that COVID-19 was spreading between humans, but on 14 January, the WHO stated that there was “no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus.”
Then 2 wks later, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus flew to Beijing for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who so overwhelmed Mr. Ghebreyesus that he lauded Chinese authorities for “setting a new standard for outbreak control,” praising their “openness for sharing information.” He likely walked away with a trunk full of untraceable USDs, as is the way in China.
Dr. Li might have disagreed with that sentiment. But, he was never able to voice his objections: He died after contracting COVID-19 coronavirus. My source said he was taken away, never to be heard from again, as is the way in China.
When the WHO emergency committee discussed whether to declare COVID-19 coronavirus a public-health emergency on 23 January, international observers had discredited Chinese health data.
Yet the criminally corrupt Mr. Ghebreyesus relied on fake data in arguing against declaring an emergency over the objections of other committee members.
That decision delayed the mobilization of public-health resources around the world.
John Mackenzie, a committee member, attributed the delay to “very poor reporting” and “very poor communication” from the Chinese communist officials.
After finally declaring an emergency on 30 January, paid actor Ghebreyesus continued to lavish praise on China. As late as 20 February, he argued that Chinese actions were “slowing the spread of coronavirus to the rest of the world.” When in fact they were aiding its deadly spread.
When President Trump limited travel from China to the US on 31 January, a responsible decision that brought the US precious time, Mr. Ghebreyesus had the temerity to confront President Trump declaring it would “have the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public health benefit.”
The record is clear
The WHO lent its imprimatur to Chinese disinformation and blessed China’s slow response to its domestic outbreak, which likely caused a 20X increase in cases, according to a University of Southampton study.
The Chinese communist government know they invested very wisely. They backed Mr. Ghebreyesus bid to run the WHO in Y 2017, seeking to plant an ally in the UN leadership. Who was better suited for the role than a criminally corrupt Ethiopian leftist political operative with a history of covering up health emergencies.
As one of his 1st actions in the corner office Mr. Ghebreyesus assured the Chinese communists that he would adhere to the “One China” policy, barring Taiwanese participation.
The Trump Administration opposed that campaign to lead the organization but could not surmount China’s sway even though it had given about $900-M to China’s paultry $86-M for operations a bargain price.
Congress should investigate communist China’s influence on the WHO, and the US should use its ample funding of the organization as leverage to demand transparency about its dealings with China.
Our financial participation in the WHO is now at issue, as President Trump will withhold any further payments to its support and demand Mr. Ghebreyesus step down. The UN bowd to Beijing rather than serve the public interest, and the world has and continues to the pay price in lives lost and economies collapsed.
Have a happy healthy Easter and Passover weekend, stay home, Keep the Faith!
