The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 200 points, while the Nasdaq closed at an all-time high. In today’s After the Bell, we…

Show of hands—who here thought that the market would be soaring one day after President Donald Trump announced plans to place tariffs on another $200 billion of Chinese goods?
That’s exactly what happened on Thursday, as the S&P 500 gained 0.9% to 2798.29—a five-month high—while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 224.44 points, or 0.9%, to 24,924.89. The Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.4% to 7823.92, a new all-time high.
The consumer-price index climbed 2.9% in June from a year ago, its highest level since 2012, though other measures—namely its month-over-month increase—disappointed slightly. Together they confirm Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell‘s observation that the U.S. economy is in a “really good place,” although he did express mild concern about the possible impact of tariffs.
