“The Democrats do not have anyone who can beat Donald Trump”
Democrats currently do not have anyone who can defeat President Donald Trump in Y 2020, legendary singer and songwriter Bruce Springsteen told reporters Sunday.
“I don’t see anyone out there at the moment… the man who can beat Trump, or the woman who can beat Trump,” said Springsteen, who is a longtime Democrat. “The Democrats don’t have an obvious, effective presidential candidate,” someone “who can speak some of the same language” as President Trump.
Mr. Springsteen lauded the Democrats for winning the House in the midterm elections, but said he would “like to have seen a much more full-throated [rejection] of the past two years,” stressing that “We have come too far and worked too hard. Too many good people paid too high a price to allow this.”
Mr. Springsteen has been a frequent critic of the Trump administration, just last week calling the president “deeply damaged at his core” and “dangerous,” according to the published report in The Sunday Times.
Springsteen, who is viewed as having many of the same supporters as Trump does, explained to The Sunday Times several reasons people became Trump voters.
In addition to difficult times for working-class people when steel mills closed in the 1970’s and 1980’s and the explosion of technology that made many feel they were no longer part of the country, Mr. Springsteen said, “Add to that, someone comes in and plays on your racial anxieties, and blames an enormous amount of this on the ‘other’ from the southern side of the border, and you’re going to have an audience for those views.”
Bruce Springsteen said he’s “not driven to write any anti-Trump diatribe,” adding that criticizing the president isn’t “my job, that’s somebody else’s job,” the Hall of Fame rocker said.
“I’m not driven to write any anti-Trump diatribe; that does not feel necessary at the moment, it is everywhere and all over … it feels a redundant to me at the moment.”
