- It is difficult to Impeach someone who has done nothing wrong
President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was is not concerned that he would get impeached and that payments made ahead of the Y 2016 election by his former personal attorney Michael Cohen to 2 women did not violate campaign finance laws.
“It’s hard to impeach somebody who has not done anything wrong and who’s created the greatest economy in the history of our country,” President Trump told Reuters in an Oval Office interview.
“I’m not concerned, no. I think that the people would revolt if that happened,” he said.
Court filings last week drew renewed attention to 6-figure payments made during the Y 2016 campaign by Cohen to two women so they would not discuss their alleged affairs with the candidate.
Democrats in Congress boasted that President Trump could face impeachment and jail time if the transactions violated campaign finance laws.
Michael Cohen is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in New York for his role in the payments to the women.
President Trump denies affairs with Stormy Daniels and the other woman whom Mr. Cohen said was given hush money, former Playboy model Karen McDougal.
Earlier this year, President Trump acknowledged repaying Mr. Cohen for $130,000 paid to porn star Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels. President Trump said Michael Cohen should get what he deserves.
“Number 1, it was not a campaign contribution. If it were, it is only civil, and even if it’s only civil, there was no violation based on what we did. OK?
“Michael Cohen is a lawyer. I assume he would know what he’s doing,” President Trump said when asked if he had discussed campaign finance laws with Mr. Cohen.
Asked about prosecutors’ assertions that a number of people who had worked for him met or had business dealings with Russians before and during his 2016 Presidential campaign, Trump said: “The stuff you are talking about is peanut stuff.”
He then sought to turn the subject to his 2016 Democratic opponent.
“I haven’t heard this, but I can only tell you this: Hillary Clinton – her husband got money, she got money, she paid money, why doesn’t somebody talk about that?” President Trump said.
