Sundays Ferrari Challenge Race Results: Paul, The high spot of Sunday morning was Trofeo Pirelli Qualifying. With the engine issues of Saturday solved, Cooper MacNeil laid down a blistering 2:03.3 to claim Pole. Benjamin Hites, Saturday’s overall winner was second with a 2:04.2 with Thomas Tippl third at 2:05.1.
Sunday, Cooper, with engine issues resolved was off in a class of his own. Hites made an aggressive move in turn one at the start and went off course. When he rejoined, he was well back in the pack with Tippl running second behind a disappearing MacNeil. Hites made a fantastic run back up to third place, but was unable to pass either Thomas or Cooper before the end of the race.
So, Sunday brought the same finishers to the podium but in a different order with Cooper on the Top step and Hites in 3rd.
Following up on Eric Marston’s progress, he ended up P4 in qualifying for Coppa Shell Am, less than a tenth off P3.
In the Coppa Shell Am race
Eric started 4th in class, got up to 3rd and was holding well with Lisa Clark, coming from a podium finish Saturday, pushing to pass Eric. About mid race, Lisa went off course trying to avoid another car, ultimately having a relatively mild accident.
A yellow flag came out soon after. But, before the yellow, Eric had to use evasive action to avoid a competitor who had a mechanical issue and was swerving all over the track. In the midst of this, another car got past him, putting him back into 4th and off the podium. As it was impossible to clear Lisa’s car from a dangerous location, the clock ran out under yellow and Eric never had the chance to get past the 3rd place car and back on the podium.
However, 4 solid finishes over 2 race weekends now has Eric running second in the Coppa Shell Am championship, a full 10 points ahead of the 3rd place driver. Next stop is Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA. All the best,DC
