The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved President Donald Trump’s choice for Secretary of State.

The panel recommend Rex Tillerson’s nomination to the full Senate, where the former CEO of Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) is almost certain to be confirmed by the Republican-led chamber.

Sen. Bob Corker, the committee’s Republican Chairman, says he has “no doubt” Tillerson is well-qualified, citing his leadership of the energy giant.

Mr. Tillerson’s nomination received an important boost when Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) decided to support him.

SEnator Rubio said that despite serious reservations about Mr. Tillerson, particularly over his views on Russia, he believed a President is entitled to significant deference in assembling his Cabinet.

Senator Rubio’s announcement in a statement posted on Facebook (NYSE:FB) came just hours before the Foreign Relations Committee was slated to meet and vote on Mr. Tillerson’s nomination. Senator Rubio’s support assured that the nominee will move through the committee and win full Senate confirmation.
