FLASH: Spring is in the air!
The calendar says March, we turn our clocks forward on the 10th, and the aisles of your local card shop are turning Green for St. Patrick’s Day.
So that means it is time to consider some Spring cleaning.
Our bodies need a proper “spring cleaning” to get a fresh start for the warmer seasons to come.
Throughout the Winter months it’s easy for a junk to build up and weigh us down physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Below are 10 ways to go out with the bad, and in with the good and revitalize, as follpws”
Water cleanses and restores life. A cleansing/detox bath uses 2 handfuls sea salt, 2 handfuls of baking soda, 4 spoons of ginger powder in hot water. Encourage detoxifying perspiration daily with a steam bath, sauna, and exercise. Use yoga twists to facilitate elimination of waste and impurities. Before a bath, steam or shower, dry brush your skin using a natural bristle brush in long strokes to help the lymphatic system cleanse. Begin at the feet on up. Use circular movements over the belly, then hands, arms, back, and shoulders. Gentle downward strokes on neck, throat, and chest. Exfoliate the skin.
Deep breathing stimulates a lymphatic flow cleansing. A yogic breath is done seated, 2X a day; 1st exhale, then, inhale through the nose to a count of 4, hold the breath for 7, and exhale through the mouth for an 8 count. The Chinese say to use a “fire breath” to cleanse the sinus and the mind. This is done by closing off the right nostril and rapidly inhaling and exhaling through the left nostril for 30 secs, and then switching sides.
Herbs for Cleansing
Environment, food additives, stress, all challenge the body detoxing organs: your skin, intestines, liver, lungs, kidneys and lymph system. Adding certain herbs to your daily meals for 2-3 weeks along with a healthy diet supports those detox organs. Alfalfa alkalizes and detoxes the body as well as having protein and vitamins. Cilantro is considered a metal detoxifier. A compress of basil can help skin eruptions and bacteria. The catechins found in green tea increases the production of some of your body’s detoxing enzymes. Milk thistle is believed to be a liver cleanser and detoxifier. Herbal teas that can help support inner cleaning include: dandelion, ginger, burdock, and juniper berry.
A Fresh Taste
Spring bursts forth with newly available fruits and vegetables to try out. Add 1 new Organis choice to your meal each day or week. Cook or serve it so you feel it will be delicious. Eat it in a mindful way, noting its sensations of taste, visual appeal, and textures.
It happens to everyone–visitors find places to go that you never seem to get around to visiting yourself. Experience a local attraction for an adventure– museum, park, garden, walking path, gallery, concert, wine or brewery tour.
Colorize for Uplifted Mood
Psychological studies show that colors stimulate hormones that affect moods and spirit by way of the central nervous system. Awaken your Spring senses with colors. Orange sparks creativity and enthusiasm. Purple inspires confidence courage, conquering obstacles. Green is a color of balance and harmony between head and heart, renews and restores energy. Yellows spark joy and happiness. Blues soothe and lower blood pressure–great for a relaxation break. Use your color in a new item of clothing, or a new decorative piece, or paint one or more walls in your home for a new look, and new way of feeling.
The Sprouts of Newness
Plant your own small indoor garden. You can start with seeds or cuttings in a few little pots. With each pot give it a personal spiritual meaning such as hope, peace, family, love. In just 15 mins a day you can tend your plants and smile to see your growing special meanings or affirmations.
Studies show that scents have powerful effects on the brain’s chemicals and hormones. Celebrate the change in season in your home. Use essential oils. Freshen drawers with moistened cotton wool pads with bergamot, lime, and lavender oils. Lavender has a soothing aroma. Bergamot and eucalyptus awaken your spring senses with energizing qualities. Lavender, geranium and basil blends create delight. Or the woodiness of frankincense and cedar wood. Natural refreshing scents are pine, fir, cedarwood, frankincense, lemon, orange or grapefruit in any combination.
The new season is a perfect time to renew a friendship with someone you have lost touch with, or just felt you did not have the time to spare. Open up 1 Spring afternoon to re-grow this special connection.
Spring Loose Your Inner Child
Everyone has that inner child. Renew the fun and excitement with a silly fun-loving deed. Splash through a puddle or patch of mud. Go down a slide or swing high in the air. Splurge on a Hot Fudge Sundae.
You do not need to do them all, though they are simple and rewarding, so pick the those that suit your lifestyle: clean house; mind, body and spirit!
Eat healthy, Be healthy, Live lively
