President Trump tweeted Wednesday that the wall on the southern US border was “going up very fast despite total obstruction by Democrats in Congress and elsewhere” from varying news reports about the structure’s status.
The tweet also linked to an Instagram post showing drone footage from US Customs and Border Protection (CPB) of the wall’s progress.
President Trump’s Twitter post came amid conflicting reports whether an 18-ft steel bollard barrier shown in last week’s CPB footage replaced aged portions of the wall or represented a new wall.
Acting CPB Commissioner Mark Morgan said Tuesday that the 60 miles of wall shown the footage was “brand new,” replacing “old, dilapidated” structures in Arizona that no longer worked.
“There’s a false narrative out there that really wants to make a big deal about that it’s a replacement,” Mr. Morgan told reporters Tuesday. “This hearkens back to when we called it a fence, a wall, a barrier.
“Look, what was there was old, dilapidated, and did not work.”
President Trump’s Tweet also came after The WPost earlier Wednesday he was so eager to have the new wall in place by the 2020 election that he had “directed aides to fast-track billions of dollars’ worth of construction contracts, aggressively seize private land, and disregard environmental rules.”
President Trump also promised to pardon aides of “potential wrongdoing should they have to break laws to get the barriers built quickly,” the WP reported.
President Trump slammed the report as “fake news,” Tweeting: “This was made up by The Washington Post only in order to demean and disparage.”
