President Trump, “People Do Not Come to Our Country Illegally”
President Donald Trump says he has a solution to the federal government missing a court-imposed deadline to reunite migrant children with their families: “Tell people not to come to our country illegally.”
Addressing questions about the missed deadline before departing the White House Tuesday for Europe, President Trump says, “That’s the solution. Do not come to our country illegally. Come like other people do. Come legally.”
President Trump is criticizing some Democrats for calling for an end to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) claiming their position proves “Democrats want open borders, and they don’t mind crime.”
In a TV interview Secretary Azar said the HHS is working to make sure the parents are legit, and so far, has weeded out 5 adults claiming to be parents who had either failed DNA tests or confessed prior to a DNA test.
“If we had not done this work, done our work to protect child welfare by confirming parentage and doing criminal background checks on the individuals, the children would have been reunited in exceedingly dangerous situations,” he said, adding: “I believe we are saving kids’ lives here, by the work we are doing before, we are connecting these with these purported parents.”
Azar added that 16 adults were found “unfit,” including five who confessed they were not parents or failed DNA testing.
Again, to the court: “Tell people not to come to our country illegally.”
