Friday, President Trump said a government report Friday showing massive US job losses from the C-19 coronavirus chaos is not a surprise and that he should not be blamed for it.
The Labor Department announced Friday that the US lost 20.5-M jobs in April, as the nation enacted practices that collapsed the economy. The unemployment rate 3X’d to 14.7%.
“It was fully expected. There’s no surprise,” he said. “Somebody said, ‘Oh, look at this.’ Well, even the Democrats are not blaming me for that, but what I can do is I will bring it back.”
President Trump expressed confidence that employment numbers will snap back quickly, given the nature of the shutdown.
“We artificially closed it. Those jobs will all be back, and they will l be back very soon and next year we are going to have a phenomenal year. People are ready to go. We have got to get it open, safely. People are ready to go,” he said.
About 77% of workers laid off in the United States due to coronavirus think they will get rehired, according to a new Washington Post/Ipsos poll.
That is compared to only 20% who believe it somewhat unlikely or very unlikely their former employer will rehire them.
