President Trump, “More rate cuts, ‘bigger & faster'”

Wednesday, President Trump said the Federal Reserve must cut rates “bigger and faster” for the United States to be competitive against other countries. The stock market reversed and finished mixed with a Very Bullish bias. Wall Street likes cheap money

Our problem is a Federal Reserve that is too proud to admit their mistake of acting too fast and tightening too much (and that I was right!). They must Cut Rates bigger and faster, and stop their ridiculous quantitative tightening NOW,” Trump said in a series of Twitter posts.

Three more Central Banks cut rates. Our problem is not China – We are stronger than ever, money is pouring into the US while China is losing companies by the thousands to other countries, and their currency is under siege,” he tweeted.

The President has for months been calling on the Fed to lower interest rates to support the US economy.

His surprise move last week to impose new tariffs on Chinese imports has thrown the Federal Reserve another curveball that may force it to cut rates more than the central bank had hoped was necessary to protect the economy from trade-policy risks.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Monday urged the Fed to cut key rates by another three-quarters of a point to a full point by the end of the year to bring U.S. rates in line with rates elsewhere.

The tweets also come just days after the 4 former chairs of the Fed called for the US central bank to remain free to work independently and without fear of political reprisals in a rare joint public statement.

President Trump has repeatedly railed against the Fed for raising rates 4X last year, saying that Chairman Powell’s monetary policies have held back economic growth.

The public pressure on the Fed by a US President has been unprecedented, as the central bank has traditionally been viewed as independent.

As former chairs of the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System, we are united in the conviction that the Fed and its chair must be permitted to act independently and in the best interests of the economy, free of short-term political pressures and, in particular, without the threat of removal or demotion of Fed leaders for political reasons,” the 4 former Fed Chairs: Paul Volcker, Alan Greenspan, Ben Bernanke and Janet Yellen -wrote in an opinion essay published in the WS-J.

It is critical to preserve the Federal Reserve’s ability to make decisions based on the best interests of the nation, not the interests of a small group of politicians,” the former Fed Chairs wrote.

Mr. Volcker was 1st appointed by Democratic President Carter and reappointed to a 2nd term by Republican President Reagan. Greenspan was appointed by 4 different Presidents: Reagan, George HW Bush and George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Mr. Bernanke was appointed by George W. Bush and reappointed by Democratic President Hussein Obama, and Mrs. Yellen was appointed by Hussein Obama.

The Fed lowered interest rates to historically low rates and accumulated bonds on its ledger in a bid to stimulate growth after the Y 2008 financial crisis.

But amid a lengthy economic recovery, the Fed has raised borrowing costs and shed bond holdings draining liquidity, measures that President Trump has criticized.

Last Wednesday, the Fed cut interest rates for the 1st time in a decade and moved up plans to stop shedding its bond holdings. In explaining the cut, Powell cited signs of a global slowdown, US trade tensions and an effort to raise inflation.

Monday, as trade tensions with China heated up, President Trump referred to the Fed yet again in response to Beijing’s move to devalue its currency.

China dropped the price of their currency to an almost a historic low. It’s called ‘currency manipulation.’ Are you listening Federal Reserve?” President Trump Tweeted.

Expect President Trump to get the rate cuts in September and December.
