Fact: Washington has held an Independence Day celebration for decades, featuring a parade along Constitution Avenue, a concert on the Capitol lawn with music by the National Symphony Orchestra and fireworks beginning at dusk near the Washington Monument.
And Thursday, the 4th of July, President Trump continues the tradition and presents a show of the USA’s military might to a celebration that has been light on the displays.
“Our July 4th Salute to America at the Lincoln Memorial is looking to be really big. It will be the show of a lifetime!” President Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
He returned to Twitter 2 hours later with more:
“The cost of our great Salute to America tomorrow will be very little compared to what it is worth. We own the planes, we have the pilots, the airport is right next door, all we need is the fuel. We own the tanks and all. Fireworks are donated by 2 of the greats. Nice!”
Under White House direction, the Pentagon arranged for an Air Force B-2 stealth bomber and other warplanes to conduct flyovers of the celebration on the National Mall.
There will be Navy F-35 and F-18 fighter jets, the Navy Blue Angels aerial acrobatics team, Army and Coast Guard helicopters, Marine V-22 Ospreys and Air Force One.
Bradley fighting vehicles were in place Wednesday near the Lincoln Memorial, where President Trump will deliver a speech on for the Independence Day celebration.
A small number of 60-ton Army Abrams battle tanks were sent to Washington by rail to be positioned on or near the National Mall.
President Trump, declared that the extravaganza is a “Salute to America,” and that military leaders are “thrilled” to participate.
“Military Leaders are thrilled to be doing this & showing to the American people, among other things, the strongest and most advanced Military anywhere in the World,” President Trump tweeted. “Incredible Flyovers & biggest ever Fireworks!”
White House officials countered criticism by stressing that the President would deliver a patriotic speech at the Lincoln Memorial during an event that he has billed as honoring the US Armed Forces.
Senior presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway said the speech will highlight “the success of this administration in opening up so many jobs for individuals, what we’ve done for veterans,” in addition to celebrating democracy, patriotism and the military.
President Trump said that he wanted a military parade of tanks and other equipment in Washington after he watched a military parade on Bastille Day in Paris in Y 2017.
A ticket-only area in front of the Lincoln Memorial has bee set aside for VIPs, including members of President Trump’s family, friends and members of the military, the White House said.
The RNC is distributing a “small number” of tickets to the event, which it says is standard practice.
The Pentagon’s Top Brass will attend.
Fox News will carry the entire event, tune in.
Making and Keeping America Great Again!
Have a Happy 4th of July!
