President Trump Begins Search for New Supreme Court Judge
- “I am starting search to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Kennedy”
Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday launched an immediate search for someone to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom he hailed as a spectacular man with great vision and heart.
Speaking to reporters during an Oval Office meeting with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President Trump said he would draw from a list of 25 potential court candidates that his campaign had assembled during his Presidential run.
He told the press, “you already know the names, and I may add some.”
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81 anni, announced his retirement Wednesday, giving President Donald Trump the chance to cement conservative control of the high court.
Justice Kennedy said in a statement he is stepping down after more than 30 years on the court.
A Republican appointee, he has held the Key vote on such high-profile issues as abortion, affirmative action, gay rights, guns, campaign finance and voting rights.
Justice Kennedy said he has informed his colleagues and President Trump of his plans, and that his retirement will take effect at the end of July.
