Preakness Stakes Shows the Power of Keeneland
Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence’s Cloud Computing, purchased at Keeneland’s 2015 September Yearling Sale, won the 142nd running of the $1.5 million Preakness (G1) Saturday at Pimlico.
Nine of the 10 3-year-olds colts competing in the Preakness were graduates of Keeneland sales, including runner-up Classic Empire and third-place finisher Senior Investment.
Keeneland sales have produced 23 Preakness winners, including last year’s winner, Exaggerator, and four consecutive winners from 2010-2013: Lookin At Lucky, Shackleford, Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another and Oxbow. Nineteen Keeneland sales alumni have won the Belmont (G1), third leg of the Triple Crown, to be run June 10.
Cloud Computing, by Maclean’s Music, sold to Mike Ryan, agent, for $200,000 at the September Sale. (Click here for a video of Cloud Computing in the Keeneland sales ring.) Ryan co-bred Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Always Dreaming, who finished eighth in the Preakness.
Chad Brown trains Cloud Computing, bred in Kentucky by Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings and Stretch Run Ventures. Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, consigned the colt to the September Sale.
Cloud Computing was ridden by Javier Castellano.
