‘Never Say Die’ the End of Aging
- “The value is in living well…not living forever.”
Aubrey de Grey, 55 anni, is not an ordinary scientist. He has dedicated over a decade to prove to everyone that it is indeed possible to live for over 1,000 years while healthy, happy, and vibrant.
Known for his book Ending Aging, he has taken his research on regenerative medicine to a new level, and he has his own research center to prove it.
One might ask if his own imminent mortality could be the rocket that surges his desire to ensure that all people have the right to continue living. For sure he is working 2X overtime to convince the world that the process of engineering human cells, tissues or organs can aid in the extension of life as we know it.
Not only does Dr. de Grey understand the profound effect of mechanical replacements for tissues injured by trauma, damaged by disease, or worn by time, but he also understands the biggest challenges to his research: convincing others that it is truly possible to extend life beyond what is known today.
To continue his research and perfect his findings, Dr. de Grey co-founded the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS) in Y 2009 to utilize an engineered approach that is designed to keep the process of degradation below the threshold of a deadly disease.
So far, his research foundation has raised more than $7,900,000 in donations, most of which were from Ethereum (ETH), and have acquired thousands of partners who support their effort to regenerate cells and extend life.
“I’ve been a fan of Aubrey’s work since I first read Ending Aging. I personally support SENS’s efforts because they focus on creating solutions to the diseases of aging, one of the greatest problems facing humanity, and is very much in line with my goal to positively impact the lives of millions of people around the world,” said Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder of Ethereum and Bitcoin Magazine.
It seems odd to believe that one of the biggest challenges that Dr. de Grey faces in his fight to combat the destruction or decline of organs and cells is the lack of confidence he has from some of the people he hopes to help.
Many critics of his research complain that it is not right to alter the natural evolution of man, leading them to question the ethics of his research.
“What people fail to see is that this research is not just about looking great or living forever,” he said in response to his critics who doubt his motives. “This ignorance is what stands in the way of people understanding this research and the importance of it.”
Dr. De Grey then went on to explain in detail how people tend to fall victim to “psychological madness” and fear surrounding their lack of truly understanding the importance of regenerative medicine. He even goes so far as to call it “suicide” for those who would refuse to take the therapy, even if they are not taking it to heal or reverse a disease.
Dr. de Grey has seen his fair share of financial and in-kind support, but there is still a great need for additional funding.
“Unfortunately, the rate of progress is limited based on the money received,” he said. “We need to pay the people to actually do what they are trained to do on this issue. It starts with getting the word out so that people can understand the value.”
The process of overcoming public confusion and self-denial is a grueling one that leads to an overabundance of travel time, speaking engagements, and interviews. All of which he feels is well worth it if it will help the public understand how the treatments work and why they are so vital to the improvement of our overall health.
Dr. de Grey puts a great deal of stock in the fact that public understanding will lead to improved levels of financial support. He hopes that even the government will see the inherent value in his research.
“The government will save money in the long run because it will no longer have to spend money to heal those who are sick.”
“The value is in living well…not living forever.”
