Modena, Italia Home of Ferrari & Osteria Francescana

Modena is a microcosm of everything that draws 48.5-M travelers to Italy annually.

Travelers to the small Northern Italian City of Modena in Emilia-Romagna, Italy’s agricultural center can find the most coveted dinning reservation on Earth, at Osteria Francescana (the best restaurant in the world), visit the home of Balsamic vinegar, walk in Piazza Grande which has a church that dates to Y 1184.

Sample the best Reggiano Parmigiano and Prosciutto on the Planet, and tour the supercar manufacturing plants of Ferrari (NYSE:RACE), Maserati (NYSE:FCAU), and Lamborghini a unit of Volkswagen AG (OTCMKT:VLKAY).

Here is are the highlights if you are  planning a trip to Northern Italy and Modena is on your list, as follows:

How to get there

Modena is about 100 miles southeast of Milano, making it an easy drive from Malpensa Airport. It’s a 2-hour drive North from Florence, or a 30 mins train ride from Bologna.

Where to Stay

Most travelers to Emilia-Romagna stay in Bologna, the area’s largest city and a culinary capital in its own right. While Bologna has the largest supply of hotel rooms, most are mid-range. Bypass Bologna and opt for  Quartopiano, a luxurious boutique hotel.

For more of a country experience, book in to the Relais & Chateaux property Antica Corte Pallavicina, owned acclaimed Italian chef, Massimo Spigaroli. It is on the road to Parma, has a Michelin-Star restaurant, expansive farm, and bicycles for rides through the Italian agriculture countryside.

Where to Dine

Osteria Francescana opens reservations 3 months in advance, meaning 1  July will be the next chance get your. Even the best travel agents and concierges in the region have little influence there, the restaurant has just 12 tables. Be diligent and quick, there are waiting lists for every seating.

Want to drive a Ferrari?

For Ferrari fans can tour the supercar manufacturer’s museum and for the qualified get track time with a professional Ferrari driver in Maranello, 20 laps on Ferrari’s private circuit is about $9,000.
