Keeneland Yearlings Strong Showing in Breeder’s Cup
Arrogate, purchased by owner Juddmonte Farms at Keeneland’s 2014 September Yearling Sale for $560,000, defeated California Chrome to win the
$6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and lead the Keeneland sales alumni who won five of the nine races during Saturday’s second day of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita.
Clearsky Farms bred Arrogate, a 3-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song, and consigned him to the September Sale. Arrogate, who won the Travers (G1) by 13½ lengths in his last start, is trained by Bob Baffert.
Other Keeneland sales alumni who won Breeders’ Cup races on Saturday were Champagne Room, Classic Empire, Drefong and Finest City.
At odds of 33-1, 2015 September Sale graduate Champagne Room took the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Respite Farm bred the 2-year-old daughter of Broken Vow, who is trained by Peter Eurton for Ciaglia, Exline-Border, Gulliver Racing, R. Christensen, D. Legan and S. Alesia.
A weanling half-sister to Champagne Room, by Drosselmeyer, is cataloged to Keeneland’s 2016 November Breeding Stock Sale, which begins Tuesday. (Click here for her catalog page.)
John C. Oxley’s Classic Empire, a graduate of the 2015 September Sale who won Keeneland’s Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) in his last start, captured the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Oxley purchased Classic Empire for $475,000 from the consignment of Warrendale Sales, agent. Mark Casse trains the 2-year-old colt by Pioneerof the Nile, who was bred by Steven Nicholson and Brandi Nicholson.
A 4-year-old stakes-winning half-sister to Classic Empire, Uptown Twirl, is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect to the 2016 November Sale. (Click here for her catalog page.)
Baoma Corporation’s Drefong, also trained by Baffert, won the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). The 3-year-old son of Gio Ponti, bred by Frederick M. Allor, Michael T. Barnett and Anthony M. Warrender, was consigned as a weanling to the 2013 November Sale by Blackburn Farm and sold for $200,000 to Woods Edge Farm, agent. Woods Edge consigned him to the 2014 September Sale, where he sold for $450,000 to Tanma Corp.
Seltzer Thoroughbreds LLC purchased its Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner, Finest City, for $85,000 at the 2013 September Sale from Bluewater Sales, agent. HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC bred the 4-year-old daughter of City Zip, consigned as a weanling by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, to the 2012 November Sale and purchased by Cobra Farm for $50,000.
