There Health Benefits to Drinking Good Water
There are disadvantages to not drinking enough water, as the Human body is made mostly of water.
In fact, the human body consists of about 42 liters (11 gals) of water, which accounts for between 50 and 70% of our body weight.
Our blood is 85% water, your muscles 80% water, your brain 75% water and even our bones are 25% water, which signals the importance this fluid plays in our health.
The Big Q: What happens if we do not drink enough good water?
The Big A: The Key risk factor for kidney stones is not drinking enough water. There is also some research showing that high fluid intake is linked to a lower risk of certain types of cancer, such as bladder cancer and colorectal cancer.
More, even the risk of fatal coronary heart disease has been linked to water intake, with women who drank 5 or more glasses of water per day reducing their risk by 41% compared to women who drank less.
Men reduced their risk by 54%.
Our body needs water for blood circulation, metabolism, regulation of body temperature and waste removal.
If even mildly dehydrated mood and cognitive function may suffer. In fact, according to a study published in the journal Physiology & Behavior, dehydrated drivers made 2X the amount of errors during a 2-hour drive compared to hydrated drivers.
So the issue is not that water isn’t important for optimal functioning; it’s that you may not need to chug water and carry a bottle with you wherever you go in order to stay adequately hydrated, meaning 8, 8oz glasses of water (64oz) is not necessary.
It is unclear how many Americans are truly dehydrated, but it is more common among the elderly and children.
One study even suggested more than 50% of American children are dehydrated, while about 25% do not drink water on a daily basis. However, some have suggested that the value of the study used to denote dehydration may have been overly conservative: 800 mOsm (mean urine osmality)/kg or higher when 1,200 mOsm/kg may still be within the normal range.
Drinking 8, 8-oz glasses of pure water a day may not cause us any harm, it is just that the evidence is lacking on whether that is the magic number for everyone, and most likely it appears that it is not. The reality is that some people may be dehydrated and would benefit from drinking more water each day, and from making water their primary source of fluids.
Our water requirements vary depending on age, activity level, climate and more. But you need not get bogged down with trying to figure out the exact amount your body needs or tracking how many glasses you’ve consumed in a day.
There is no need for that because our body will let us know.
Using thirst as a guide to how much water you need to drink is a simple way to help ensure your individual needs are met, day by day.
We can also use color of your urine as a guide. If it is a deep, dark yellow then you are likely not drinking enough water.
If your urine is scant or if you have not urinated in many hours, that too is an indication that you’re not drinking enough water. Based on the results from a few different studies, a healthy person urinates on average about 7 to 9X a day.
Ultimately, to listening to our body and letting thirst be be guide is the best solution for getting the water the human body needs each day. You cannot count sugared beverages (soda) and beer, and other alcoholic beverages water.
I am clearly a proponent of good water for good health and have been for all of my adult life. A year ago I learned about hydrogenated water, and have been drinking 750ml daily.

- H2 is an extraordinary antioxidant, a free radical quencher that selectively scavenges the most dangerous and destructive hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals initiate their cycle of destruction by stealing electrons from molecules in DNA, proteins, and fats, destabilizing them and setting off a chain reaction of oxidative stress. H2 readily gives up electrons to hydroxyl radicals, which stabilizes them and stops them in their tracks. It also reduces the toxicity of peroxynitrite, another destructive oxidant, and further boosts the body’s defenses by increasing production of natural antioxidants such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase.
- H2 has beneficial effects on cell signaling and gene expression. It suppresses TNF-alpha and other proteins involved in inflammation and turns on mechanisms that protect against cell death. But because H2 is selective, it does not scavenge essential redox signaling radicals that play a key role as cellular messengers.
- Recent studies show that H2-infused water increases the production of a hormone called ghrelin. Secreted in the stomach, ghrelin is best known for stimulating appetite, but it also boosts growth hormone release and has protective effects in the brain, vascular system, liver, and elsewhere.
- H2 “nano” molecules are able to diffuse through cellular membranes, enter the mitochondria and nucleus of cells, cross the blood-brain barrier, and exert their positive effects in tissues and organs throughout the body.
So, it is not surprising that benefits of H2 therapy have been demonstrated in animal models and/or human studies in a wide range of conditions, including traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, strokes, heart attacks, vascular disease, diabetes, liver and kidney disorders, autoimmune conditions, and lung problems.

The 3 Key avenues of H2 administration have been used in clinical research are:
- inhaling hydrogen gas
- injecting hydrogen-rich saline, and
- drinking molecular hydrogen-infused water

Drinking 500 ml of hydrogen water daily approximates the dose used in the hydrogen therapy’s research, and actually floods the system with free radical-quenching electrons. And because H2 is a safe, natural molecule that is common to the body, you cannot get too much of it.
Molecular hydrogen water has a promising future as a safe, simple, inexpensive therapy for health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment of our most common health challenges.
