In Asia

Gold prices held steady Monday as investors were cautious ahead of the US Congressional electionsTuesday which will determine whether the Republican or Democratic Party controls Congress.

  • Spot gold was steady at $1,232.08 oz, as of 0415 GMT
  • US gold futures were flat at $1,233.4 oz.

Traders do not want to extend any risk because of the growing uncertainty around the elections

The USD lost ground against most of its major peers, as growing expectations of an orderly BREXIT bolstered the GBP, EUR and broader global investor sentiment.

Energy

Oil prices dipped Monday morning in Asia after the US said it would allow 8ht countries to import Crude Oil from Iran, easing market jitters over tight supply from Iranian sanctions that took effect 5 November.

WTI Crude Oil Futures for December delivery dropped 0.71% to $62.69 bbl at 10:47p ET on the New York Merc, while ICE Brent Oil Futures for January 2019 delivery edged down 0.19% to $72.43 bbl in London.

Stocks

Asian stocks fell Monday as fears of faster rate hikes in the US and uncertainty around the US-China trade dispute deterred investment in riskier assets.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan lost 1.5% Monday, slipping back towards last week’s 1.5 year trough of 505.61 points.

Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.3%, while South Korea’s KOSPI index declined 1.4%.

Chinese shares opened in the Red with blue-chip stocks off 1.4%, even as President Xi Jinping promised to lower import tariffs and continue to broaden market access.
