Friday’s World Markets Outlook: Asia-Pacific

Australian shares slipped Friday posting a weekly loss as fresh restrictions to contain a spike in C-19 coronavirus cases dampened hopes of a quick economic recovery.

The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.61% to 5,919.2, on the week, it declined 2.3%. In New Zealand, the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index settled 0.4% lower.

Japanese shares closed at a 1-wk low Friday 

The benchmark Nikkei share average fell 1.06% to 22,290.81 with 21 advancers on the index against 202 decliners.

The broader Topix dropped 1.42% to 1,535.20.

Hong Kong stocks fell Friday, tracking Chinese equities as a heated rally there ground to a halt after state funds announced stake cuts in companies and on signs of renewed tension with the US.

At the close of trade, the Hang Seng index was down 482.75 pts, or 1.84% to 25,727.41. The Hang Seng China Enterprises index fell 2.23% to 10,541.26.

On the wk, HSI gained 1.4%, and HSCE added 2.9%.

Mainland China shares fell Friday for the 1st time since 29 June on signs of renewed tensions with the US. and after the country’s state funds announced stake cuts in companies.

The Bull run, encouraged by state media was fuelled by signs of an early economic recovery for China from the virus, capital market reforms and accelerating inflows of foreign funds.

At the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index was down 1.05% to 3,414.21 pts, while the blue-chip CSI300 index was down 1%.

The start-up board ChiNext Composite index was higher by 0.62%.

On the wk, SSEC gained 8.3%, and CSI300 rose 8.4%, both set for best weekly gainers in more than 5 yrs.
