Update: Ferrari’s (NYSE:RACE) 1985 288 GTO Hammered for $2.53-M at Bohnam’s London
1985 FERRARI 288 GTO COUPÉ
Coachwork by Pininfarina
Sold for £1,883,333 (US$ 2,530,175) inc. premium
The Ferrari 288 GTO’s performance in the collectors’ car market is ‘turbocharged’ and it is now heading to be worth an incredible 10X what it sold for not much more than 10 years ago.
One of the 270-odd homologation specials from the mid-1980’s is again heading to auction and attention will be focused on whether it can sustain its rapid rise.
Bonhams has a guide price of £2-2.5-M (about $3.1-M) on the 1985 car, and in Y 2007 Bonhams sold a 288 GTO for £368,000 (about $498-K) including the buyers premium.
The 288 GTO was conceived as a racing version of the 308 GTB, and although history records it never did race, the 288 GTO was a Super road car, 189mph Top Speed, some say a worthy follow-up to the 250 Gran Turismo Omologato of 20 yrs prior.
The Big Q: Why so appealing?
The Big A: The supercar is savage beauty from Pininfarina, the new body, with its GTO design cues, matched by a complete reworking of chassis and drivetrain in order to make a racing car out it.
F1 technology of the time provided the blueprint for the road car to race car transformation.
The 288 GTO in the Bonhams Bond Street Sale in London on 2 December is one of the 20 cars that were supplied new to the UK.
The LHD car, Rosso Corsa and with the optional electric windows and air-conditioning, has had 5 owners, none of them F1 drivers, and covered 14,000 miles.
It is matching numbers car, and Ferrari Classiche certified.
The world gasped in Y 1984 when the 288 GTO first came out, with its astonishing price tag of £73,500, a lot more even than a Rolls of the day.
Now, will there be equal gasps in London when the hammer falls on 2 December at the Bonham’s London sale?
