Ghostzapper Yearlings Lead Solid Opening Session of The October Sale

Proven sires proved popular during the first session of The October Sale on Monday, October 23. The top filly and colt were both by Ghostzapper, currently #6 on the General Sires list, represented by 2017 Grade 1 winners Paulassilverlining and Shaman Ghost.

Jay Em Ess Stable paid the session’s top price of $275,000 for Hip 96, a daughter of Ghostzapper out of a Birdstone half-sister to stakes winners Silent Bird and A Brilliant Idea. The dark bay or brown filly, the second foal of her dam, was consigned by Legacy Bloodstock.

Hip 63
, the session’s top colt, also by Ghostzapper, went for $180,000 to Superfine Farm. The dark bay or brown colt, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, is out of a half-sister to graded stakes winner La Traviata, the dam of Group 1 winners Seventh Heaven (IRE) and Crusade.

Between the top colt and filly was Hip 131, a filly by three-time Leading Sire Tapit which sold for $250,000 to Mathis Stable from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. That filly is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Winning Cause out of a half-sister to graded stakes winner Society Hostess.

Over the course of the session, 230 yearlings changed hands for a total of $6,479,500. The average was $28,172 and the median was $10,000. Twenty-two horses sold for $100,000 or more.

“It’s too early to tell much,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning of the overall numbers. “I’m not going to make any dramatic statements [comparing today’s session to last year’s sale]. We’ve got a lot of horses left to sell.”

The top yearling by a Freshman Sire of this year was Hip 34, a daughter of Orb who went for $140,000 to Madison River Thoroughbreds from the consignment of Runnymede Farm. The top price for a first-crop yearling sire was Hip 195, a filly by Shakin It Up which sold for $120,000 to the Moss Group from the consignment of Catalyst Bloodstock.
