Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) revealed details of a September hack that compromised millions of phone numbers and email addresses.
With 400,000 accounts, hackers were able to steal access tokens of 30 million Facebook users. From there, users had varying degrees of information compromised. 14 million had sensitive information including recent check-ins stolen, 15 million had names and contact information breached, and 1 million only had their access token stolen. Facebook has also published a website where users can review their status relating to the incident.
CNBC provides details:
“We are still looking at other ways the people behind these attacks may have used Facebook, and we haven’t ruled out the possibility of smaller scale, low-level access attempts,” said Guy Rosen, Facebook vice president of product management, adding that the company had also notified the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the Irish Data Protection Commission.
The security breach is also under investigation by the FBI, who asked the social media giant not to discuss who might be behind the hack. The attack started on September 14th and was shut down by Facebook in late September.
Facebook, Inc. shares closed at $153.74 on Friday, up $0.39 (+0.25%). Year-to-date, FB has declined -12.88%, versus a 4.76% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.
