German lawmakers have passed a controversial law under which Facebook, Twitter, and other social media companies could face fines of up to €50 million ($57 million) for failing to remove hate speech. The Network Enforcement Act, commonly referred to as the “Facebook law,” was passed by the Bundestag, Germany’s parliamentary body, on Friday. It will go into effect in October.
- Unfortunately, while LTN would see this a step forward, Germany has been on the forefront of Islamic immigration. We have no doubt that Germany, when reffering to ‘hate speech’, are in fact referring to anti-Islamic posts. Of any kind. Whether blasphemy, comedy at Islams expense, or a Germanic person in some way ‘insulting’ a Muslim. Social Media now have huge outside incentive to moderate their platform in favor of Islam. Which they have already been doing.
A solar-powered drone backed by Facebook that could one day provide worldwide internet access has completed a test flight in Arizona, after an earlier attempt ended with a crash landing.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s long-term plan for the drone, called Aquila, is to have it and others provide internet access to 4bn people around the world who are currently in the dark.
“When Aquila is ready, it will be a fleet of solar-powered planes that will beam internet connectivity across the world,” he wrote on Facebook.
Facebook said on Friday it was changing the computer algorithm behind its News Feed to limit the reach of people known to frequently blast out links to clickbait stories, sensationalist websites and misinformation.
The move is another step by the world’s largest social network to weed out spam, a battle Facebook has fought for years but that gained urgency after hoax news stories spread widely during last year’s U.S. presidential campaign.
For months now, social media companies have been grappling with how to minimize or eradicate hate speech on their platforms. YouTube has been working to make sure advertisers’ content doesn’t show up on hateful videos. Instagram is using AI to delete unsavory comments. And earlier this week, ProPublica reported on the internal training materials Facebook gives to the content managers who moderate comments and postings on the platform on how to calculate what is and isn’t hate speech.
