F1 Shanghai: Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) and MercedesAMG on Top of Time Sheets


MercedesAMG’s Lewis Hamilton led Ferrari’s (NYSE:RACE) Kimi Raikkonen through both of Friday’s FP (practice) sessions ahead of the 2018 Formula One Chinese Grand Prix.

The drivers battled wet and windy conditions at the Shanghai International Circuit, but the MercedesAMG driver set a time of 1 min, 33.482 secs in FP2, while Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was 0.007 secs behind.

In the FP1 session, Mr. Hamilton topped the time sheets with a 1:33.999 on soft tires, while Mr. Raikkonen who used the ultrasoft compound posted a 1:34.358.

A switch to the ultrasofts bore fruit for Hamilton in FP2. The compound helped him close an early duel in the session for the quickest time between Mr. Raikkonen and MercedesAMG’s Valteri Bottas, and as in the morning he would remain on Top throughout the day.

Tire manufacturers Pirelli is eagerly awaiting Sunday’s race Work in free practice is essential for formulating race strategy, particularly when there’s a gap between the compounds like there is here. Looks likely that we could see some different strategies in qualifying and the race.

More strategies = more fun.

And, with just 0.108 secs splitting the Top 4 drivers (Ferraris and MercedesAMGs), it looks set to be a close contest in Shanghai qualifying strongly Saturday could play a big part.

The teams moved onto long runs as the session wore on, while the rain arrived toward the end.

Fernando Alonso quickly succeeded him at the the top of the time sheet, before Mr. Raikkonen and then Daniel Ricciardo who each started the session with medium tires, traded places with him.

Around 30 mins in, Mr. Hamilton assumed his position in 1st place, which he retained till the session ended.
