F1: Vettel’s Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) Racer Christened “Gina”
Sebastian Vettel has christened his new Ferrari F1 racer, “Gina” short for Regina (Queen), signalling his resolve to make the car the Queen of all she sees.
At least 10 years has passed since The Scuderia secured the last of their world titles, and Mr. Vettel is impatient to restore Ferrari to its iconic supremacy.
Mr. Vettel is a race driver reared on greatness at Red Bull, becoming a 4X world champion at 25 anni, then he moved to Maranello to prove that he was worthy of legend status.
Mr. Vettel has been furnished with the raw material that could make it all possible.
The travelling F1 racing show, with its vast supporting cast has converged on Melbourne’s Albert Park in anticipation of a far richer drama than usual.
An adage that circulates at the 1st Grand Prix of a season is that “everyone is set back to Zero”.
Ferrari was the most impressive performers at Winter testing at Barcelona, Spain, with both Mr. Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen eclipsing the times of the MercedesAMG team lead by Lewis Hamilton.
The Big Q is whether The Scuderia can drive its 1st championship in a decade.
Much depends on if they have the technical know-how to make the necessary adaptations over the next 8 months.
The Y 2017 car, Ferrari began its design and build under James Allison, the respected engineer from Lotus.
But over the Winter, Mr. Allison switched to MercedesAMG to replace Paddy Lowe, and the fear is that he could have taken any prospect of a title-winning edge with him.
During testing, Mr. Hamilton claimed that Ferrari is “bluffing”, that they have significant pace still to produce. But the same could be said of MercedesAMG, who are understood to have operated a lower engine mode during the 2 Barcelona tests, which lost them an estimated 0.6 secs per lap. The 1st practice sessions Friday at Melbourne should be more instructive as to where the true balance of power lies.
A Winter of regulation changes was calculated to force a shake-up in the order.
When the rules were rewritten in Y 2009, Team Brawn surged to glory, and when they done over again in Y 2014, MercedesAMG leapt over Red Bull, for whom Mr. Vettel had just won 9 races in a row.
Dynasties are there to be dislodged, and F1 needs to see some Mercedes vulnerability to rekindle the Action in the Show.
A MercedesAMG-Ferrari fight to the last would be just the ticket as the sport takes steps into this fresh and fascinating chapter with its new owner, Liberty Media (NASDAQ:LMCA).
