F1: The Russian Grand Prix at Weekend at Sochi on NBC Sport Network
The 2017 F1 season continues this weekend at Sochi, Russia, home of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, with this year’s Russian Grand Prix with the excitement of the Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) duel with Mercedes AMG
MercedesAMG has dominated all 3 of the races on the fast circuit at Sochi, with team drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg combining to lead ever single racing lap in the history of Sochi Autodrom.
MercedesAMG and Mr. Hamilton will face a challenge this weekend from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
The 4X World Champion has won 2 of the 1st 3 races of the Y 2017 campaign, including a victory in Bahrain 2 weeks ago.
MercedesAMG’s Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in Bahrain, despite Mr. Vettel’s win. Ferrari (102 pts) currently holds the edge over MercedeAMG’s (99 pts) in the Constructor Standings.
In the 2-weeks since the last Grand Prix weekend, the FIA confirmed several regulation changes for the Y 2018 season, 1st among them the decision to ban T-wings and shark-fins.
The T-wing attachments have been notorious for falling off; after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen ran over a wing that had sprung free from Bottas’ Mercedes, it was decided no more T-wing attachments.
The Halo device trialed by teams throughout 2016 to increase driver safety will not be used. The FIA has opted for the more aesthetically pleasing option of the “Shield,” a screen stretching up from the frontal area of the car right back to the driver. The shield is expected to be tested later this season.
