F1 Next Generation, Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) to Add Woman to Young Driver Program

$RACE

Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) is planning to add a woman to its young driver program, the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA), as it aims to develop the next generation of talent in F1.

For years, Ferrari has drafted in experienced drivers to race for its F1 team, but in Y 2019 it gave an opportunity to Charles Leclerc, who had been a member of the FDA since Y 2016, to partner with 4X world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Nn the back of Mr. Leclerc’s success, the Maranello Outfit is looking to increase the size of its young driver program and will look to include a woman in it for the 1st time.

“We are increasing the number of drivers in the Ferrari Driver Academy next year,” team principal Mattia Binotto said. “So, a few other drivers will join. I’m not in the position to tell you how many and who, but it’s something on which we are working on very hard. The driver academy is an important investment for us, we need to look at the future generation of talent for Ferrari.

“The Academy will also look for women in the future — women should be part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. That’s something we are working right now to make sure that it will happen very soon. Ferrari is always investing in the future to make sure that we can be stronger and stronger over the medium and long term.”

In Y 2019, the highest-placed female driver in the FIA single seater pyramid was Tatiana Calderon, who raced an entire season with Arden in F2. She failed to score a point, with a season-best finish of 13th, and is unlikely to secure a budget to race in the F1-feeder series next year.

The all-female W Series completed its 1st season, with Jamie Chadwick finishing the year as the inaugural champion. Ms. Chadwick is already signed to Williams as a development driver, but admitted her experiences in Y 2019 made F1 feel further away than before.

Current FDA members include the son of 7X world champion Michael Schumacher, Mick, who competed in F2 this year and is preparing for a 2nd season in the series in Y 2020. He will be joined by fellow FDA members Robert Schwartzman and Marcus Armstrong, who finished 1st and 2nd in F3 this year, and Callum Ilott and Giuliano Alesi, who both drove in F2 this year.

Ferrari will continue to create value in the long term. Ferrari is a quality 1st long term luxury products investment, and I see it at 200+/share in that frame.
