In the day’s 1st practice session, mainly run in the dry, Ferrari’s (NYSE:RACE) Sebastian Vettel edged Mr. Hamilton into 2nd with a lap of 1:29.166, while Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo placed 3rd.

MercedesAMG’s Lewis Hamilton topped the time-sheet in the rain during FP2 or the 2017 Japanese Formula One Grand Prix Friday.

He posted 1 of just 5 timed laps in an afternoon of action hit by a long delay due to the heavy rains. Mr. Hamilton’s time of 1 min, 48.719 secs was enough to put him ahead of Force India’s Esteban Ocon.

F1 posted the classification from FP1:

Mr. Vettel, is 34 points back from Mr. Hamilton in the championship standing, came 0.211 secs faster than the MercedesAMG’s driver in the opening session at Suzuka.

The Top Spot in the rankings changed hands several times as Ferrari, MercedesAMG and Red Bull Racing all looked evenly matched, but it was 4-time world champion Sebastian Vettel who prevailed in the end with the quickest lap on supersoft tires.

Mr. Vettel’s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen finished the opening session of Friday in 4th place, while Valtteri Bottas was almost 1 sec down from Mr. Vettel in his MercedesAMG racer.

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen had problems in FP1 and finished in 6th spot after failing to get inside 1.5 secs of the fastest lap.
