F1: Its Official Vietnam Grand Prix in 2020
- This marks the 1st new venue in the Liberty Media Era’s Formula 1 Group (FWONA)
F1 officials today announced that the series will visit the Vietnamese capital City of Hanoi for the 1st time in Y 2020 on a track that looks very good, to say the least.
Bringing such a huge event like a Grand Prix to the country will give the world a look at modern-day Vietnam, increase tourism and all of the usual plus points that go with winning a spot on the F1 racing season calendar.
The track looks to be a winner.
Similarly to how the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, was designed, inspiration has been taken from existing world circuits, with a certain element of unique flair to boot.
Turns 1 and 2 are inspired by the opening corners of the Nurburgring, turns 12 through 15 mirror the opening lap at Monaco and turns 16 through 19 resemble the left right wiggle of turns 2 through 6 at Suzuka. The Japanese course is widely regarded as 1 of the best and most testing sections of track anywhere on the F1 calendar.
This course is not all corners, though.
It features 3 long straights including the mile-long back straight, which actually gradually eases to the right, it will see drivers hit speeds of close to 210 mph there.
The addition of Vietnam to the Y 2020 calendar is the 1st new venue to be inked under the stewardship of Liberty Media and CEO Chase Carey, who previously said that a 25-race season was not out of the question for future years.
Mr. Carey is already looking forward to the event.
“We are delighted to announce that Hanoi will host a Formula 1 Grand Prix,” said Mr. Carey. “Since we became involved in this sport in 2017, we have talked about developing new destination cities to broaden the appeal of Formula 1, and the Vietnamese Grand Prix is a realization of that ambition. We are thrilled to be here in Hanoi, one of the most exciting cities in the world right now with such a rich history and an incredible future ahead of it. This is the perfect formula for Grand Prix racing, and I look forward to this becoming a real highlight of the F1 calendar.”
