FLASH: Sebastian Vettel on the hunt for his 5th World F1 Championship
Every Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) driver feels a heavy burden of expectation but the pressure is mounting more than ever on Sebastian Vettel, 31 anni, as the enters his 5th season with F1’s most successful and glamorous team.
The comparisons with great the Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher, who had to wait until his 5th year at The Scuderia in Y 2000 before ending a long title drought for the iconic Italian constructor, are being ramped up again.
Ferrari last won a title more than a decade ago and have sent hopes due North with Mr. Vettel fastest in testing and MercedesAMG rival Lewis Hamilton suggesting the Italians could be 1/2 sec quicker.
Mr. Vettel is naturally wary of fueling the hype when asked at the start of testing whether the pieces were in place for him to emulate the success of his 7X world champion predecessor.
“It does not feel like 5 years to be honest, but that’s what it is,” said the German who joined in Y 2015 as a 4X champion from Red Bull Racing and is now the same age as Schumacher was 19 years ago.
“Overall the progression is there, the team is developing and closer together year by year so I hope that this year we get to have a lot of fun — and fun means to win a lot of races and then ultimately you are fighting for the championship.
“That’s obviously what we want but at this point it’s very far away,” added the German, who won five races last year in a championship that slipped away after costly errors by both him and the team.
Mr. Schumacher started the Y 2000 season with a new team mate in Brazilian Rubens Barrichello and Mr. Vettel begins the campaign in Australia on 17 March with Charles Leclerc, 21 anni, a fresh face next door
