Ferrari’s (NYSE:RACE) Sebastian Vettel missed out on winning the 2019 Canadian F1 Grand Prix after incurring a 5-sec penalty after an incident with Lewis Hamilton on the 48th lap Sunday.
So, while Mr. Vettel finished 1st, the race win was given to Mr. Hamilton, who had stayed within 5 secs of Mr. Vettel following the controversial steward’s penalty.
Mr. Vettel was penalized after running wide and nearly colliding with Mr. Hamilton. The Ferrari champion was adjudged to have re-entered the track illegally.
After the race, Mr. Hamilton admitted he would have preferred to claim the victory another way, as Mr. Vettel was very disappointed.
Valtteri Bottas suffered on the mediums tires, losing initial speed and falling behind Nico Hulkenberg.
While MercedesAMG’s start was solid, Ferrari did better as Mr. Vettel raced to an early lead. And it was a race between Messers Vettel and Hamilton.
The near collision on Lap 48 prompted an investigation from the stewards, who hit Vettel with a penalty for re-entering the track.
But, Mr. Vettel was still in front by just under 3 secs, but MercedesAMG now had hope of marking its 7th win this season.
Mr. Hamilton had to work to make sure Mr. Vettel would not get the 5-sec advantage he needed to neutralize the force of the penalty.
Keeping things close meant Mr. Hamilton did enough to take the win, though not many of the 307,000 fans in attendance were pleased with the outcome of the race.
The circumstances of Mr. Hamilton’s 5th win of the season intensifies the rivalry between the 2 Top drivers in the sport.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished 3rd.
