FLASH: Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen won in Austria, result investigated, victory stands
Recall that Charles Leclerc came very close to becoming an F1 race-winner in Bahrain, Sunday he was denied a win again at the Austrian Grand Prix after being overtaken 2 laps from the Chequered flag by Max Verstappen, who marked his 2nd win in 2 years at the Red Bull Ring.
But, as the Chequered flag fell the result was under investigation as the stewards announced they would review his pass of Mr. Leclerc.
The 2 young drivers participated in a super late race dual before the Red Bull Racing driver zipped past the races leader Leclerc at Turn 3 on Lap 69 of 71, where they banging wheels as Leclerc ran off the track.
Mr. Verstappen held on to cross the line and posted the 5th win of his career, and the 1st for a non-MercedesAMG racer in Y 2019, and giving Honda’s 1st win since Y 2006.
Valtteri Bottas finished 3rd for MercedesaMG, while a late pass on Lewis Hamilton saw Sebastian Vettel finish 4th after making a 2-stop strategy work, with Mr. Hamilton coming 5th, the 1st time he’s finished outside the Top 2 this year.
Behind Mr. Hamilton, Lando Norris was a 6th for McLaren, holding off the Red Bull of Pierre Gasly, while Carlos Sainz, having started at the back of the grid, was 8th, ahead of the 2 Alfa Romeos of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi, the Italian scoring his 1st F1 point.
