FLASH: Top F1 teams diverge in Spanish Grand Prix tire selections
Leading F1 teams MercedesAMG, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing have selected a different amount of soft Pirelli tires for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix weekend beginning 10 May 2017.
Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) was the outlier in picking the fewest sets of the Red-walled tire last weekend in Baku, has gone for 9 sets of Reds (softs or C3) this time for both Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc.
The duo will have the joint-highest amount of softs in the field alongside Renault drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo, and Alfa Romeo pairing Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen.
Barcelona, which was the venue for F1’s 2 weeks of pre-season testing earlier this year, marks the 2nd race weekend this season that Pirelli will bring tires in the C1-C3 range. The C1 tire was previously used in Bahrain, but was avoided by teams.
MercedesAMG will have 8 sets of the C3 tire available for both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas in Spain, whereas Red Bull Racing drivers Pierre Gasly and Max Verstappen will have 7 sets.
The only other outfit to select 7 sets of softs for its drivers is the Williams team.
While Red Bull Racing has opted for a uniform selection between its drivers, MercedesAMG and Ferrari have both gone for a subtle split, with Messrs Leclerc and Hamilton getting 1 more set of the C1 and 1 fewer set of the C2 than their respective teammates.
McLaren is the 1st team this season to select more than 2 sets of the C1 tire, as Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz will both have 3 sets of the hards available for Barcelona.
The iconic Italian Supercar manufacturer claimed the title according to the latest Brand Finance Global 500 2019 report launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
