F1: Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) Ready for Final Testing Runs in Barcelona
The 2nd and final Winter testing begins Tuesday with MercedesAMG and Ferrari running to claim the advantage ahead of this new season.
The 4-day meeting will host the last on-track running before racing reconvenes in 2 weeks’ time for the campaign-opening Australian GP on 23 March in Melbourne.
Last week Test 1 amounted to systems checks as the teams debut their new cars, and was severely undermined by cold weather, including a snowstorm which all-but cancelled the 3rd day, the intensity and significance of the action is set to be ratcheted up this week as the teams and drivers complete their preparations for the Y 2018 season.
To the racers relief, warm weather is forecast for this week, and the on-track action should warm too.
F1 pre-season testing’s reputation as a guessing game has faded.
Last year, Ferrari’s victory in the season-opening Australian GP was foreseen in The Scuderia topping the time-sheets ahead of MercedesAMG throughout testing. So were the struggles of Red Bull to keep pace with MercedesAMG and Ferrari, and pain of McLaren-Honda.
In Y 2016 Ferrari were also fastest in pre-season testing before MercedesAMG locked out the front-row in Melbourne, but Y 2015 provided a clear correlation between testing and the season’s commencement when MercedesAMG dominated both.
And in Y 2014 Williams caused a stir by heading MercedesAMG in testing and made good on their promise by beating Ferrari to 3rd place in the Constructors’ Championship.
So, we can expect the teams will leave Barcelona Friday night with a strong impression of where they stand ahead of this new season.
Have a terrific week.
