F1: Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) Looks Quickest Ahead of Melbourne Gran Prix
Lewis Hamilton said Tuesday that Top rivals Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) should be considered the favorites for this year’s Formula 1 championship.
Despite the recent dominance of MercedesAMG ,who have claimed the past 3 Formula 1 championships, Mr. Hamilton said Ferrari’s form in Winter testing at Barcelona, Spain should have the team regarded as the ones to beat in the Y 2017 season.
“I think Ferrari must be the favorites. We cannot take our eyes off them, I think they’re doing such a great job at the moment,” Mr. Hamilton said.
“And Red Bull look like they’ve gone quite well too.
“We’ll see in the next days, and more importantly, we will see over the next weeks. It’s going to be close in the 1st race, that is for sure.
“To be honest I think Red Bull looked very quick today and I think Ferrari looks like they might be the quickest.
The now-retired Nico Rosberg won the championship last year for MercedesAMG after Mr. Hamilton’s back-to-back victories in Y’s 2014 and 2015.
It was not a smooth run for Mr. Hamilton on the 1st day of the 2nd week of Winter testing in Barcelona, with the 3X champion forced to end his stint in the car early for repairs.
Mr. Hamilton was forced to cut short his run after 49 laps to allow the team time to fix a damaged floor before new teammate Valtteri Bottas jumped in for the afternoon session.
He said that the car did not feel “spectacular” and the team was still searching for more performance ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.
“It’s a work in progress. This morning we did not get a huge amount of laps in,” said Mr. Hamilton, who had the 4th-fastest time of the day behind Felipe Massa, Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
“We had some damage to the floor and it was important to make sure that Valtteri Bottas could get lots of testing in the afternoon, which we think the afternoon would be better.
“It did not feel that spectacular this morning, we had some issues with tire temps and with some damage to the floor.
“I sacrificed a bit of my morning to make sure that the car was fixed in time for Valtteri this afternoon.”
MercedesAMG and Ferrari dominated the 1st pre-season test days in Barcelona last week, but Mr. Hamilton said there was more work to be done to prepare the new-look cars for the opening race on 26 March .
“We’re on target in terms of laps that we’ve done, target in terms of how much time we wanted to get, but of course the performance we are always searching for more,” Mr. Hamilton said.
“I would say we’re, to throw in a number, probably at 70%, 80% maybe, but hope that we pull out the rest to make sure we are at 100% in Melbourne.”
