F1: Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) Hungarian Grand Prix Priview
- Sebastian Vettel Leads FP2 Weather: Sunny/Dry, 27-32°C air, 39-51°C track
Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) were fastest on the ultrasofts in the 2nd practice session, while the MercedesAMG’s pair of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finished 5th and 5th fastest, respectively, in both sessions.
The final F1 event before the series takes its Summer break for the month of August comes at this weekend with the Hungarian Grand Prix, Round 12 of the 2018 F1 season.
After a German Grand Prix that gave us all lots of surprises, Lewis Hamilton finds himself back in the lead of the driver’s championship by 17 points over Ferrari’s (NYSE:RACE) Sebastian Vettel,
At the close of the race in Germany Mr.Hamilton took advantage of the wet/dry race and pit strategy to take the Chequered Flag, while Mr. Vettel crashed out with 15 laps after comfortably leading most of the way.
Germany provided yet more drama in what has already been an eventful season that changes in complexion with each race.
Hungary has been known to produce a surprise or 2 of its own.
Recall that Damon Hill had a near victory in a Silver Arrow there in Y 1997. Ayear later, Michael Schumacher and strategist Ross Brawn changed their strategy mid-race to a 3 stop effort, and Mr. Schumacher then drove a string of qualifying like laps, to overcome the McLaren duo of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard and mark a victory for The Scuderia.
Fernando Alonso scored an upset win in Y 2003, the 1st of his F1 career. Jenson Button then scored an upset win in a wet/dry race in Y 2006, also the 1st F1 victory of his career.
The infamous Y 2007 McLaren “spygate” case was ignited in Hungary, after then teammates Alonso and Hamilton saw their budding rivalry come to a head in qualifying, Mr. Alonso blocked Mr. Hamilton in the pits, trying to prevent him from getting 1 more flying lap, and the fallout saw the “spygate” controversy become public.
Recently, RedBull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo took advantage of another wet/dry race in & 2014 to post an upset win of his own.
Notably, the Hungaroring has a long history of producing very exciting racing, and given the nature of this 2018 season, it would not be surprising if it occurs again. Above is a circuit preview, below is this weekend race preview
Ferrari’s tire selection
Ferrari has taken a more aggressive approach than its Key rivals in its tire selection for this Grand Prix.
MercedesAMG and Red Bull Racing have opted for 7 sets of the ultrasofts for each of its drivers, as Ferrari has given Sebastian Vettel 9 sets of the softest compound available that weekend, with Kimi Raikkonen 8 sets.
Ferrari’s choice leaves Messrs Vettel and Raikkonen each with 3 sets of the Pirelli soft tires.
