Last season’s Canadian Grand Prix saw Ferrari unseat 3 years of MercedesAMG’s dominance in Montreal, as Sebastian Vettel took his 3rd victory of Y 2018. But with The Scuderia in irons with a win-less Y 2019 to date, and Lewis Hamilton hungry to take a record equaling 7th win at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, this year’s event will be a super contest.
Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) went into the season to end its decade-long championship drought, but in failing to face up to the reality of its situation in the 1st 6 rounds, it may have fallen out of championship contention.
Now, ahead of the 7th round of the 2019 F1 season, Ferrari is in reality check mode.
The iconic Italian team started the year as the favorite for the championship, but after 6 rounds it has scored only 4 podiums, 1 Pole and no wins. With 25% of the season past, there is talk of MercedesAMG, which has won all 6 races in Y 2019, having its most dominant season ever.
The Big Q: What has gone wrong?
The Big A: Ferrari’s racer is not quick enough.
Ok, that is an oversimplification of a very nuanced problem, but a fundamental lack of pace in low and medium-speed corners has forced The Scuderia into errors it should not have made.
On occasion it has had the fastest car on the grid, and that could well be the case again this weekend in Canada, but it has squandered its opps at victory while trying to overcompensate for the car’s short falls.
Ferrari is not bringing any major updates to Montreal, so it will rely on the package it has to battle a MercedesAMG that is very good in slow-speed corners and is expected to have a significant engine upgrade in Montreal.
The race weekend at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will mark the 2nd appearance of the C5 compound, the softest available tire in Pirelli’s 2019 range, after Monaco.
Ferrari has chosen the C4 tire, equipping both Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc with a grid-high 5 sets of the Yellow-walled medium.
Championship leader MercedesAMG has 8ht sets of the C5 each driver, with Lewis Hamilton getting 1 more set of mediums at the expense of an additional set of the hard compound.
Ferrari is the Aristocrat of the automotive sector.
The iconic Italian Supercar manufacturer claimed the title according to the latest Brand Finance Global 500 2019 report launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
