F1: Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) Brought its A-Game to Shanghai
After pre-season testing prior to the start of the 2018 F1 season, pundits said MercedesAMG was expected to run away with both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles for the 5th year running after they proved to be well ahead of their main rivals Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) and Red Bull Racing.
And MBZAMG ‘Hot Shoe” Lewis Hamilton was favorite to win the season-opening Australian Grand Prix after his Pole position lap was almost a sec quicker than the 2nd-placed Scuderia driver Kimi Raikkonen.
Mr. Hamilton led the race for 24 laps, but a computer glitch and a virtual safety car handed the victory to the very astute champion Sebastian Vettel.
The Bahrain Grand Prix was expected to be closer between the 3 Key teams, but MercedesAMG was the favorite as the desert circuit is power sensitive owing to the long straights in the 1st and final sectors.
The MBZAMG team struggled to get the super soft tire working in the hot temperatures, while Ferrari had no such problems as both of the Maranello outfit’s cars qualified on the front row.
Mr. Vettel looked comfortable at lead until MercedesAMG switched their strategy and put pressure on the Ferrari driver in the latter part of the race.
The Mr. Vettel held on to take his 2nd win of the season which puts him 17-points ahead of Mr. Hamilton, who could only finish 3rd after starting 9th.
MercedesAMG chief Toto Wolff said that the season has not started as expected for his Team, and is aware they need to have error-free races to get back to winning ways.
“This is not the start to the 2018 season we had hoped for,” Wolff said. “For 2 races in a row, we did damage limitation with one car and lost the win with the other. Both races were decided by fine margins, but that doesn’t make it any better; in fact, it probably makes it more frustrating.”
After the Bahrain Grand Prix Sunday the F1 ‘circus’ headed straight to China for the 3rd race of the season on 15 April.
The Shanghai International Circuit has been good to Mr. Hamilton, who has won there on 5 occasions and the team will be hoping it continues as a 3rd loss will certainly put them on the back foot in the title race.
Mr. Vettel is also very good on the Chinese track, and Ferrari brings its A-Game to race #1.
So tune in and enjoy the racing.
