F1: Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) and MercedesAMG Could Leave the Sport
- Ferrari is not bluffing, neither is MercedesAMG
Liberty Media (NASDAQ:LMCA) bought into F1 in a $4-B deal last January and have since proposed a number of controversial changes.
The most problematic of those has involved the number of engines that teams will be allowed to utilize from the Y 2021 campaign on.
Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) chief Sergio Marchionne has been vocal in his criticism of the plans, with MercedesAMG’s boss Toto Wolff not a fan either.
Former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone has issued a strong warning to Liberty Media with the Y 2018 season due to start this weekend in Australia.
Talking to people like Sergio and Toto, they are not idiots,” Mr. Ecclestone told reporters.
“They will weigh up whether it is better for everyone to leave and do their own series, or do we need the FIA to look over things? So people will start to think what to do.
“The trouble now is that Sergio has come out and said: ‘The next time I see you, I’m going to punch you in the face.’ And when he sees the people, he’s got to be sure that he’s going to punch them in the face. Sergio is not the guy that makes threats as a joke and then runs away from it.”
Liberty Media received mixed responses for considering withdrawing Ferrari’s legacy payments and ending the Grid Girls tradition.
Practice sessions begin at the Albert Park Lake track Friday, with qualifying for Sunday’s race scheduled Saturday.
