The Circuit of The Americas, aka COTA, has been kind to Lewis Hamilton in , but it was his MercedesAMG teammate and the only driver who can stop him winning a 6th world crown, Valtteri Bottas, who took Pole position for Sunday’s United States Grand Prix in true F1 racing fashion.
It was Mr. Hamilton who showed the most impressive pace over 1 lap in Friday FP, but the 5X world champion made a mistake on his final run in the middle sector, forcing him out of contention for Pole position and leaving him 5th.
No 1 improved their position on the final runs, meaning Mr. Bottas’s impressive opening gambit was enough to secure a first pole at COTA and the 11th of his F1 career. But he finished just 0.012s ahead of the Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) of Sebastian Vettel.
Max Verstappen made it 3 different teams in the Top 3 positions heading up the 2nd row for Red Bull, just 0.067s off the pace as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who has been on Pole in 5 of the last 6 races who came up 4th.
Thailand’s Alex Albon secured his 3rd consecutive Top 6 finish for Red Bull, with Carlos Sainz finishing best of the rest in 7th and taking the lead in his qualifying head-to-head with McLaren team mate Lando Norris 10-9, as he beat Mr. Noris by a position.
Daniel Ricciardo was the leading Renault in 9th as Pierre Gasly rounded out the Top 10 for Toro Rosso having made it three Honda-powered cars in the Pole position shoot-out.
It was not a great day for Mr. Hamilton, but he’s still in a strong position for Sunday, considering he only needs an 8th-place finish or better to secure a historic 6th world championship.

Note: Goldman Sachs upgraded Ferrari to ‘buy‘ from ‘neutral ‘calling the stock’s pullback a good “entry point.” “We upgrade Ferrari from Neutral to Buy, offering 15% upside to our new price targets of 182. Our thesis, outlined in Life of Luxury published in September, is fundamentally unchanged post Ferrari’s in-line 2-Q results. We view the stock’s recent pullback since July 16 has provided good entry point in here.
