Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, 22 anni, secured Pole position for the 2019 Brazilian Formula One Grand Prix after finishing fastest in qualifying on Saturday.

Lewis Hamilton had gone quickest in the 3rd and final practice session earlier in the day, but neither he nor Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel were able to match Mr. Verstappen’s times in qualifying at Interlagos in Sao Paulo.

Q: Max Verstappen set the pace during the opening phase of the 1st session, with Ferrari appearing to be keeping something in reserve.

Mr. Vettel clocked a 1st lap of 1 min and 8.556 secs, quicker than teammate Charles Leclerc.

Mr. Verstappen made an early statement, along with Ferrari, who placed both of their drivers in the 5 fastest, sandwiched around MercedesAMGs’ Valtteri Bottas, with his Silver Arrows teammate Mr. Hamilton the 6th-quickest.

Red Bull and Ferrari’s early speed was solid and Mr. Verstappen had provisional Pole to himself and went a 1/10th of a sec quicker on his final lap, but he was left sweating over whether he had been quick enough to keep Pole away from Mr. Vettel.

Mr. Verstappen had done enough, and expressed his delight with the way his car had performed.

Lights go out at 1410 local time tomorrow, which is 1710 UTC, with the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix set to be fought out over 71 laps.
