F1: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Qualifying Results, Hamilton on ‘The Pole’
Lewis Hamilton finished the final Y 2018 F1 qualifying season with his 11th Pole position of the season, and MercedesAMG became the 1st team in the history of F1 to record 5 straight front row lockouts at the same venue.
The championship is won, so MercedesAMG has nothing more to fight for, but they are professional and went out to win another Pole, and they did.
“It was quite an emotional qualifying session for me,” said Mr. Hamilton. “This is the last time I’m going to be qualifying in this car, and I know you guys watch it but the emotional rollercoaster that I’ve gone through with this car. I’m probably closer to this car than I have been with any car. I’m emotionally attached, and you know what, it’s not always been easy. It’s been a struggle with her but it’s been a real privilege to work with her this year and I’m just so grateful for the team, for everyone for putting it together.
“Today was so much fun. To go out there and just be able to express yourself and push the car the way you want, there is no better feeling.”
Starting alongside Mr. Hamilton is his teammate Valtteri Bottas. Mr. Bottas is motivated to finally Top the podium on the final race day in Y 2018.
“Personally, P2 isn’t what I was expecting but for us, even though we have already secured the constructors’ title, we can still perform at a high level,” said Mr. Bottas. “As a team, being one-two for the final race is good.
“I think I lost a little bit of time in turn 17-18, just very difficult to get it perfectly right but he was performing well. He was tough to beat this time. There was a possibility for that but he did a better job in the lap.”
Lining up 3rd will be the Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) of Sebastian Vettel. Never appearing to have the raw speed of the MercedesAMG cars this weekend, Mr. Vettel was more aggressive behind the wheel as he fought to close the gap in Qualifying Saturday..
“I enjoyed the session,” said Mr. Vettel. “In Q1 it was really tight, so maybe we had a word to say and Q2 Lewis put a really strong lap in on the harder tire and I thought Wow, this is going to be difficult. The 1st run in Q3 I really had a good lap.
“It was very close again, but they must have had still some cushion for the last run. I did improve, I think the track ramped up but not enough to be a threat but for tomorrow I am quite confident. Should be great fun.”
